British Business Bank puts £10m into Fuel Ventures funds

The money goes in through the Regional Angels Programme, set up in 2019 to widen access to early-stage equity outside the usual places. Fuel Ventures backs technology founders.

The British Business Bank has committed £10 million to the Fuel Ventures funds. The Bank put the figure at €11 million in euro terms.

The commitment runs through the Bank's Regional Angels Programme.

That programme launched in 2019. Its stated purpose is to address imbalances in access to early-stage equity finance — in plain terms, the fact that where a founder is based has long shaped whether they can raise a first round.

Fuel Ventures is a multi-fund venture capital firm. It was set up to back technology founders and has since expanded beyond that original shape.

The structure matters for anyone planning a raise. The Bank is not writing cheques to companies here; it is putting money into a fund manager, who then decides which founders receive it.

So the pitch a founder makes is to Fuel Ventures, on Fuel Ventures' terms and timetable, not to a state body.

What has not been said is as relevant as what has. There is no published cheque size, no stated number of companies to be backed, no regional allocation and no deployment period.

Founders outside London should treat this as a signal that one more early-stage pot has been topped up, and check Fuel Ventures' own stage and sector criteria before spending a week on a deck.
