Essex robotics spin-out raises £1m from three funding sources
Versatile RobotX has assembled just over £1 million from a private fund, Innovate UK and Defra. The package, not the amount, is the story for hardware founders.

Versatile RobotX, a robotics company based in Colchester, has secured more than £1 million to move its farm robots from trials into commercial use.
The money is not a single round. It combines investment from the British Design Fund with support from Innovate UK Growth Catalyst – Investor Partnerships Round 2, plus grants from the Defra Farming Innovation Programme.
That structure is the point. Innovate UK's Investor Partnerships route pays out alongside a private investor rather than instead of one, which means the grant follows the equity cheque, not the other way round.
Paul Laniran, Innovation Lead Agriculture at Innovate UK, said the investment showed "how public and private funding can work together to support the development and commercialisation of innovative agricultural technologies".
For a hardware founder, the sequencing matters. A company on this path needs an investor willing to back capital-heavy kit before the public money arrives, and evidence that the machines work in the field.
Versatile RobotX is a University of Essex spin-out, founded in July 2024 by Professor Klaus McDonald-Maier and Dr Vishwanathan Mohan. Both run research groups at the university: McDonald-Maier heads the Robotics and Embedded Systems Research Group, Mohan the AgriRobotics Laboratory.
The company sells two machines. The Fruit and Vegetable Autonomous Picker uses sensing, machine learning and precision manipulators to detect and pick produce. The Hydroponic Robotic Harvester works in soilless systems and can move younger plants between growing stations.
The company says the technology has been validated through field trials with UK growers including Wilkin & Sons of Tiptree and JEPCO. Neither grower's results have been published.
McDonald-Maier said the funding "will allow us to accelerate the transition from successful field trials to commercial deployment", and credited investors, Innovate UK, Defra, Freeport East and the University of Essex.
Mohan said growers cite affordability, reliability and ease of deployment as the barriers to automation, and pointed to Robotics-as-a-Service as the route to adoption. No pricing or subscription rates have been announced.
The company has also been supported by University of Essex Enterprise Limited, which handles technology transfer for the university's academics, and by EPSRC and Freeport East.
The capital is earmarked for product development, manufacturing readiness, customer engagement and commercial expansion. Headcount and revenue figures have not been disclosed.
The lesson for anyone building physical products in the UK: the public grant schemes increasingly ride on top of private investment rather than substituting for it. Line up the investor first, and have trial data from named customers ready, because that is what the co-funding is buying.
