Medly raises $8m seed for AI exam tutoring
Felix Capital led a €6.89m round in the London platform, which says it has passed 400,000 UK users 18 months after launch. Two former NHS doctors run it.
Medly AI has raised a €6.89 million seed round, worth $8 million, to expand its AI tutoring platform for exam students.
Felix Capital led. Eka Ventures and Ada Ventures, both already on the cap table, put in more money.
The angels named in the round have day jobs in adjacent territory: Andrey Dobrynin, chief executive of InvestEngine; Al Giles, venture partner at Creator Fund; Jean Hammond, general partner at LearnLaunch Accelerator; and Hector Mason, general partner at Episode 1 Ventures.
Medly was founded by Dr Paul Jung and Dr Kavi Samra, UCL medicine graduates who met in their first year of secondary school at the age of 11. Both left careers in the NHS to build the company.
The product covers GCSE, IGCSE, A-Level and International Baccalaureate preparation. A separate curriculum-agnostic version, Medly Open, is aimed at university students.
The company says the tutor runs on a proprietary combination of seven large language models, tracks progress and adjusts its feedback style to the student. Handwriting recognition lets students work on a tablet or with a stylus, which the company argues suits maths and chemistry.
Medly's pitch against ChatGPT and its rivals is accuracy: purpose-built and tested for marking, rather than general-purpose generative AI.
The results claims are the company's own. Among students who used the platform for last summer's GCSEs, Medly reports that 74% improved by at least one grade and 41% by two or more. It says the largest improvements came in Physics and English Literature.
On Medly's account, the platform has grown its user base by almost 600% since launching in February 2025, passing 400,000 users in the UK alone.
There is some outside validation. In July the company was awarded a grant under the Department for Education's AI Tutoring Tools Pioneers Programme, which targets the attainment of disadvantaged pupils in England.
It has also published its first research paper, comparing its marking against human examiners, and says it has completed a randomised controlled trial with more than 1,000 UK students in lower-attaining schools.
The money goes on more UK students, more international markets, and more evidence. Medly has launched SATs preparation in the United States and plans to add APs and ACTs by the end of the year. It also intends to build its own models for UK and EEA marking and pedagogy.
For anyone building in edtech, the useful signal is not the headline number but what came attached to it: a government programme grant, a published paper and a controlled trial. Medly raised at seed with an evidence file, and its next round will be judged against it.
