Wordsmith AI adds $14m to a Series B it closed in June
The Edinburgh legal AI firm has bolted a $14m extension onto a round announced two months ago, with Intact Private Capital and FT Ventures joining the register.
Wordsmith AI has raised a $14m extension to its Series B, according to a report by UKTN. That is £10.4m at the rate quoted.
The company is based in Edinburgh and sells artificial intelligence tools for legal work.
Two investors are new to the cap table: Intact Private Capital and FT Ventures.
Two are not. Highland Europe and Index Ventures, both already shareholders, put in follow-on money.
The original Series B was announced in June. The extension therefore lands within months of the round it extends.
Extensions are read two ways. Either demand outran the allocation and the company took more at terms it liked, or the round needed topping up.
The presence of follow-on money from existing backers is the detail worth noting. Highland Europe and Index Ventures had already priced this business once and chose to write a second cheque rather than let new names take the room.
What the report does not give is the size of the Series B before the extension, so the combined figure is unknown. Nor is there a stated valuation, headcount, revenue figure or use of proceeds.
For founders in the same position, the mechanics matter more than the total. An extension at the previous round's terms is cheap capital and a short process; a new round is a new price and a new negotiation.
The signal is in who leads. When insiders fund the extension and outsiders join alongside them, the market is being told the June price held.
Wordsmith has not published, in the material seen by the Gazette, what the money is for. That is the question to put to the company before treating the raise as a growth story rather than a balance-sheet one.
