MarinaControl splits into two apps and drops in-app upgrades
Sami Bessadi built one platform for marinas and yacht owners. He has now separated it into two products and stopped selling the marina version like a consumer subscription.
MarinaControl started as a single system for the operational side of running a marina: berth management, dock walks, maintenance, safety, equipment, customer and vessel records, tasks and reporting.
Its founder, Sami Bessadi, has since split it into two applications. One is a B2B platform for marina operators. The other is a B2C app for individual boat and yacht owners.
Two separate applications have been developed, according to the company. Bessadi says the checkable evidence for that is available on request.
His reasoning is that the two groups handle much of the same information about the same assets, but buy software in entirely different ways. Serving both from one application, he says, risked compromising both.
The split then forced a second change, this time to how the marina product is sold.
Bessadi had originally built subscription and premium-access logic into the B2B application, following the conventional app-store model. Working through commercial pricing convinced him that was the wrong way to sell operational software to a marina.
A marina, on his account, is not buying an app upgrade. It may want a demonstration, a commercial discussion, onboarding, organisational access and continuing support.
So the B2B version is now being structured around direct commercial agreements. Once an agreement is signed, the marina gets an organisational account and the full operational platform, rather than consumer-style paywalls and feature limits.
The consumer app keeps the simpler route. An individual owner can subscribe themselves without speaking to anyone.
No pricing has been announced for either product, and the company has not released customer or revenue figures.
The lesson Bessadi draws is one that applies well beyond boats. Two customer types can run on the same codebase and still need different products and different business models.
For founders selling into an industry with both trade and consumer buyers, the practical point is a costly one to learn late: premium gates built into an app are a sales channel decision, not just a feature flag. Bessadi built his before discovering the marinas would not buy that way.
